Writing Toward Environmental Healing (VIRTUAL)

If you have ever seen a sapling grow out of the trunk of a tree, then you know that it’s possible to behold the new, the reborn, while also beholding what was lost, the site of ruin from which it has emerged. In this generative cross-genre workshop, we will explore the ways that poems, stories, and essays can bear witness to environmental ruin while also engendering a sense of hope and solace for both the writer and reader. We might even call this a kind of healing.

If you want to be inspired and inspire others with your writing on this topic, look no further. There is nothing more precious than the living world, no matter how far along it is in becoming dismantled. In this workshop, we’re going to capture that on the page. We’re going to behold both tree stump and sapling. All genres, all levels welcome.

Christopher Kondrich is the author of Valuing, selected by Jericho Brown as a winner of the National Poetry Series, by Library Journal as a Best Poetry Book of 2019, and as a finalist for The Believer Book Award in Poetry; and of the book-length poem Contrapuntal. His poetry and essays appear widely in such venues as the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, The Believer, Harvard Review, The Kenyon Review, New England Review, The Paris Review, and Poetry Northwest, and his work has been recognized with an Iowa Review Award, The Paris-American Reading Series Prize, and three Pushcart Prize nominations. He has received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the I-Park Foundation, the University of Denver, and Columbia University.
