1:30 pm – Craft Talk with Stephanie Elizondo Griest: Is Art Enough?
Is the all-encompassing quest to become an artist worth the sacrifices it often requires of us? How can we balance the inherent agonies with the fleeting ecstasies? To find out, Stephanie Elizondo Griest interviewed more than a hundred artists in a dozen countries — not only other writers, but painters, actors, dancers, sculptors, and musicians as well. She’ll share some of the wisdom learned along the way, then lead us through a series of prompts and discussions to help each of us envision a creative practice that is not just obtainable but sustainable.

Despite the now decades-old adage that “the personal is political,” very often, writers are expected to choose between writing about themself or writing about the world—as if there is no interchange between these two spheres. In this craft talk, Erica Berry makes the case for urgent, first-person writing that swivels between inner and outer landscapes, dwelling on the interconnectedness between them both, and offering strategies (both emotional and craft-focused) for pulling this off.
