Beyond Earth, to Earthsea: How to Add More Depth to your Fiction – WORKSHOP CANCELLED

Ever feel like your writing’s dull and lifeless? Interested in sharing a full spectrum of culture and character with your readers? Join Nisi Shawl and explore the landscape of dialect and dialogue as it can be in your work. Through discussion, examples, and exercises, we’ll explore techniques like code-switching, rhythmic emphasis, phonetic spellings, italics, slang, and cultural references. It’s time to discover and represent the underrepresented corners of your community’s voice.

Nisi Shawl wrote the 2016 Nebula finalist Everfair and the 2008 Tiptree Award-winning collection Filter House, which Ursula K. Le Guin called “amazing.” In 2005 she co-wrote Writing the Other: A Practical Approach, a standard text on inclusive representation in the imaginative genres. Her stories appeared in the groundbreaking Dark Matter anthology series and the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2017.  She has taught and spoken at institutions ranging from University of Hawai’i Manoa to Smith College. Shawl is a Carl Brandon Society founder and a Clarion West board member.  She lives in Seattle and takes frequent walks with her cat, Minnie, at the pace of an entitled feline.
