History professor Ryan Dearinger explores Tacoma, Washington’s 1885 expulsion of its Chinese residents, a mass deportation that found widespread support among Tacoma’s white workers and labor unionists, many of whom helped carry it out.
Ryan Dearinger is Professor of History and Faculty Fellow in the Honors College at George Fox University near his hometown of Portland, Oregon. He specializes in the history of the American West and Pacific Northwest, immigration, labor and working-class history, and violence in American history. Ryan was named GFU’s “Professor of the Year” for the 2022-23 academic year.
