The Jump-Off Creek author Molly Gloss looks deeply into our idea of the American cowboy and how that came to be. Streaming online at fishtrap.org or on Fishtrap’s YouTube Channel.

Myths are not lies, of course, they are the heroic stories we tell ourselves to try to uderstand who we are, what we care about, how to conduct ourselves. They are larger than life. Legends about heroes and heroic battles. Our  perception of ourselves as Americans, and the perception others around the world have of us, has been shaped in large part by the myths of the cowboy West, and in this talk, Molly will explore the link between western literature, and the events and issues we face in our lives today; and the legacy of the heroic cowboy of western novels, those men who often chose footloose independence (as well as loneliness and isolation) over the obligations (and the embrace) of family and community.

Are you in Wallowa County? Join us at Fishtrap during Fishtrap Reads as we watch the presentations from Molly Gloss and the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center together. Following each 30 minute screening, we’ll share our thoughts and and reflections on what we’ve just seen, and how they relate to The Jump-Off Creek. Light refreshments will be provided. Feel free to bring your lunch!
